Inside the book

Four children and a golden puppy lie on the grass at the edge of a pond, watching a white swan carry a letter in its beak. A bluebird flies off with a second envelope and a frog holds a third on a lily pad. Willow fronds, cattails and water lilies frame the water, with the children reflected in it.

A boy sits on the balcony of a treehouse at dusk with his chin on his hand and a ginger dog asleep at his feet, fairy lights strung along the rail. Gold leaves fill the branches around him, a squirrel reads a letter on a bough, and a bird carries an envelope off across a purple town of lit windows, winding roads and a distant church spire.

A busy nursery classroom. Children play dolls and toy cars on a green rug, build at a round blue table with a girl in a wheelchair pulled up to it, and a boy lifts a beanbag over his head by the coat pegs. A teacher in a pink cardigan strides through with one hand raised, and at the right a girl holds a carrot out to rabbits in a hutch beside a globe and a bookcase.
